A J-Class yacht is a single-masted racing sailboat built to the specifications of Nathanael Herreshoff’s Universal Rule. The J-Class are considered the peak racers of the era when the Universal Rule determined eligibility in the America’s Cup.
The most amazing yachts on the face of the earth, the J Class is a restoration project like no other. These unreal yachts once sailed the seas racing for the coveted Americas Cup, by the 1980’s these yachts were all but gone when a Newport RI yacht fan Elizabeth Myer undertook the restoration project like no other and brought the yacht Endeavour, back to life with a restoration unlike anything anyone in the private sector had ever done before. Today the planet Earth is home to 8 of these breathtaking yachts.
MDI was fortunate to have front row access to these fine yachts for the first ever J Class world championship, Aug/Sept of 2017 in Newport RI. Hosted by the New York Yacht Club the event was the first time this many J Class yachts, sailed with each other for the title of Worlds Fastest J Class yacht and the yacht Lionheart took home the final trophy FOR FIRST OVERALL.
